I Have a Full Beard. I Was Sure Mouth Tape Wouldn't Work on Me. I Was Wrong.

A real Hibertape customer, beard and all.

My wife bought me mouth tape. I laughed at her.

Not because I thought it was silly. Because I have a beard. A real one. Mustache over the lip, the whole thing. I figured tape would either slide right off my face or rip half my mustache out in the morning. Probably both.

I was waking up every day with a mouth like a dusty parking lot, so I gave it a shot anyway. Here's what actually happened.

01

The beard objection (it's a fair one)

Every guy with facial hair thinks the same two things: "it won't stick" and "it's going to hurt coming off."

The second one is a real concern. The Sleep Foundation lists it as a side effect: tape can pull on facial hair and make removal uncomfortable. So I wasn't crazy. I just needed tape that was built with guys like me in mind.

02

Why my mouth was drying out in the first place

Simple version: your nose is the air filter and humidifier. Your mouth is an open window.

Breathing through your nose warms and humidifies the air and helps trap allergens before they get in (Cleveland Clinic). Leave your mouth hanging open for eight hours and dry air blows across your tongue all night. Of course it feels like sandpaper by morning.

The whole idea behind mouth tape is to gently keep your lips closed so you default to your nose. That's it. No magic.

"I spent more time worrying about my mustache than it took to actually put the tape on."

Night one, with a full beard

I went with the Unscented, the black one. My reasoning was not scientific: black blends into a dark beard, and I didn't want to look like I had a sticker on my face.

  • It fits over the beard. Every Hibertape color fits over beards, mustaches and goatees. Mine sat right over my mustache.
  • Cactus silk, not plastic. It feels soft on your lips, more like fabric than a bandage.
  • The pull tab is the hero. In the morning you grab the tab and peel. No digging at the edge with your fingernail while you're half asleep.

The first five minutes felt weird. Then I fell asleep. The next morning I didn't reach for the water glass before I could talk, which was new for me. That's my experience, not a promise.

The beard trick: turn the stickiness down

This is the part nobody told me, so I'm telling you.

Hibertape lets you set your own stick level. Peel the strip, press it on the back of your hand, and peel it off. Do that once or twice and it grabs a little less. Then put it on your mouth.

Think of it like a new band-aid versus one you've already peeled once. Same idea. If you've got a thick mustache, start a little less sticky. If your face is clean-shaven, you might not need it at all.

Two more things that helped me: put it on a dry face (not right out of the shower), and peel it off slowly in the direction your hair grows. Common sense, but nobody thinks of it at 11 p.m.

What changed for me

I don't wake up with a dry, stale mouth most mornings now. I feel less groggy in the first hour of the day. And the beard? Still fully attached.

My wife stopped laughing at me by night three. Now we tape up together, which is a sentence I never thought I'd write. Again, that's just how it went for me. Everybody's different.

Who shouldn't use mouth tape

Straight talk: mouth tape isn't for everyone. Skip it and talk to your doctor first if you:

  • Can't breathe easily through your nose (a cold, congestion, allergies, a sinus infection or a deviated septum)
  • Snore loudly, gasp at night or stay exhausted after a full night, which can be signs of sleep apnea
  • Have asthma, COPD, a heart condition or any other breathing or health condition
  • Get irritated skin from adhesives, or feel anxious having your mouth covered

The Cleveland Clinic and the Sleep Foundation both say research on mouth taping is still limited, and a 2025 systematic review in PLOS One warns of real risks for people whose noses are blocked. Hibertape is a sleep accessory. It isn't a treatment for snoring, sleep apnea or any other condition.

Easy test first: put a strip on during the day and watch TV for 10 minutes. If breathing through your nose feels easy, try it at night.
