What is Hibertape?

Hibertape is an ergonomically designed mouth tape used for sleeping. The shape of the tape fits the contour of your mouth. We designed it using cactus silk, a soft, stretchy, breathable fabric, with an easy-to-remove pull-tab for the morning. Our Lavender and Sandalwood strips are lightly scented, and Unscented has no fragrance. Its job is simple: gently keep your lips closed so you breathe through your nose while you sleep.

How does Hibertape work?

Hibertape works by gently keeping your lips closed during sleep, which encourages you to breathe through your nose instead of your mouth. That's it: no medication, no device, just a comfortable strip of tape. It isn't a treatment for snoring or any medical condition.

Does it hurt to remove the tape in the morning?

We use a strong, skin-friendly adhesive, and you control the hold: apply, peel off, and re-apply to soften the stickiness as many times as you like. Use the pull-tab and peel slowly. If it feels too sticky, moisten the edges with a little warm water first.

Can Hibertape help with snoring?

Hibertape isn't a snoring treatment. It's designed to keep your lips closed so you breathe through your nose. A few small studies have looked at mouth taping and snoring (see our Science page), but the research is limited. Snoring has many causes and can be a sign of sleep apnea, a serious condition. If you snore loudly, or someone has noticed you stop breathing, gasp or choke in your sleep, see a doctor before trying mouth tape.

Can I still breathe with my mouth closed using the tape?

Yes, as long as your nose is clear. Hibertape is meant for people who breathe comfortably through their nose. Your nose naturally warms, humidifies and filters the air you breathe. The fabric is stretchy, so you can still part your lips or take the tape off any time. Never use it with a stuffy or blocked nose.

How do I apply Hibertape?

Applying Hibertape is very simple. Follow the steps below.

  1. Before bedtime, ensure your lips are dry and clean.
  2. Break the tape down the middle and slightly peel the paper backing from the inside out on both sides.
  3. Purse your lips slightly, like you are about to make a kiss, and apply the tape in the middle of your mouth and facilitate the application from the inside out.
  4. Apply pressure to the tape across your mouth for 3–5 seconds to ensure a tight seal on your lips, as the seal comes from the lip contact with the tape. This is especially important for men with any kind of facial hair.
  5. Then, sleep.

You control the hold: if you find the tape too sticky, simply remove it after applying once, then apply it again. You can repeat these steps as many times as necessary.

Is mouth tape safe?

For most healthy adults who breathe easily through their nose, mouth tape is a low-key bedtime habit, but it isn't right for everyone. Don't use it if you have a stuffy or blocked nose, suspected or diagnosed sleep apnea (unless your doctor says it's OK), asthma or another breathing condition, or if you've had alcohol or sedatives. If you're unsure, check with your doctor first, and take the tape off right away if you ever feel uncomfortable.

I have sensitive skin. Can I use Hibertape?

Many people with sensitive skin use it comfortably, but any adhesive can irritate some skin. Do a patch test first: stick a small piece on your inner arm for a few hours. Skip it if your lips or the skin around your mouth are chapped, broken or irritated, and stop if you notice redness, itching or a rash.

Does it work with a beard or mustache?

It can, but facial hair makes any tape harder to stick and more uncomfortable to remove. Make sure the area is clean and dry (no balm or beard oil), press firmly on your lips for 3 to 5 seconds, and focus the seal on your lips rather than the hair. Peel slowly from the pull-tab in the direction your hair grows.

Can I use Hibertape with my CPAP?

Only if your sleep doctor says so. Some doctors suggest mouth tape for CPAP users who breathe through their mouths, but that decision depends on your mask, your settings and your health. Please don't add tape to your CPAP routine on your own.

Is Hibertape safe for kids or teens?

Hibertape isn't for children. Mouth taping hasn't been studied in kids, and children who mouth-breathe at night should be seen by a doctor or dentist to find out why. For teens, talk to a doctor first.

What does the lavender scent do?

It adds a light, relaxing lavender scent to your bedtime routine. It's meant to be subtle and usually fades through the night. If you're sensitive to fragrance, choose Unscented.

How do I take it off without it hurting?

Use the pull-tab and peel slowly, holding the skin next to the tape with your other hand. If it feels too sticky, moisten the edges with a little warm water first. Next time, soften the hold before bed by applying the strip, peeling it off, and re-applying it.

What if I can't breathe through my nose?

Then don't use mouth tape. Only use it when you can breathe comfortably through your nose. If your nose blocks up during the night, or you feel short of breath, take the tape off right away. If you often have trouble breathing through your nose, see a doctor to find out why.

Will Hibertape stop my snoring?

Hibertape isn't a snoring treatment. It's designed to keep your lips closed so you breathe through your nose, and research on mouth tape and snoring is limited. Snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, so if you snore loudly or wake up gasping, talk to a doctor before trying mouth tape.

How should I get started?

Try wearing a strip for 10 to 15 minutes while you're awake and relaxed, reading or watching TV, so you get used to the feeling. Then try it at night with clean, dry lips, pressing firmly for 3 to 5 seconds. If it ever feels uncomfortable, take it off. There's no need to push through.
