Hibertape Lavender, Sandalwood and Unscented packs

Every morning went the same way. Alarm. Tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth like Velcro. A glass of water before I could form a sentence. Then a face in the mirror that looked like it had partied all night, except I'd been in bed by 10:30.

I'm not dramatic about much, but I was done with it. So I spent a few months testing every fix the internet threw at me. Here's how each one went, honestly.

1. Why I was waking up feeling like a raisin

Here's the simple version. If your mouth hangs open all night, air moves over your tongue and gums for hours. Air dries things out. Leave a sponge out on the counter overnight and see how it looks by morning. Same thing.

Mouth breathing during sleep is a well-known cause of morning dry mouth (Cleveland Clinic). Your nose is built to filter and warm the air you breathe; your mouth isn't (Sleep Foundation).

So the goal was obvious: keep my mouth closed at night. The hard part was finding a way I'd actually stick with.

2. Attempt #1: The chin strap

The idea makes sense. Strap your jaw shut, end of problem.

Reality: I looked like I was recovering from dental surgery. It slid off by 2 a.m., left lines on my face, and wrecked my hair. Also, a jaw strap doesn't really stop your lips from parting. I lasted four nights.

3. Attempt #2: Nasal strips

These help open up your nose, which is nice. But open nostrils don't stop your mouth from falling open once you're asleep. That's like opening the front door and hoping nobody uses the window.

I still use one now and then when I'm stuffy. On their own, they didn't fix my problem.

4. Attempt #3: A humidifier

Cozy. Pretty mist. Helped the room feel less dry.

My mouth was still open all night, so I still woke up thirsty, just in a nicer-smelling room. Plus I had to clean the thing every few days or it got gross. It treated the air, not the habit.

5. Attempt #4: Cheap generic tape

This is where I started to get it. Closing my mouth was the fix. The cheap tape just made it miserable.

It pulled at my lips coming off. One brand left sticky residue I scrubbed off before work. The plain white strips looked medical, and putting one on felt like I was preparing for a hostage scene. I wanted to like it. I didn't.

6. Attempt #5: Hibertape (the one that stuck)

Black tapeOrange tapePurple tape

Black, orange and purple. Every color fits over beards, mustaches and goatees.

Same idea as #4, made by people who clearly tried the cheap stuff too.

  • Cactus silk tape. Soft against my lips, not plastic-y.
  • A pull tab. Morning removal is one easy tug. No picking at the edge half-asleep.
  • Fits over facial hair. Every color fits over beards, mustaches and goatees. My boyfriend tested this one for me. Grudgingly, then happily.
  • It doesn't look clinical. Black, orange or purple. Somehow that made it feel like part of my routine instead of a medical thing.
Customer sleeping with Hibertape

The first night felt a little weird for about five minutes. Then I fell asleep. The next morning was the first one in a long time where I didn't head straight for the water glass. That's my experience, not a promise, but it's why I'm writing this.

What changed for me personally: I wake up less groggy, I don't dread mornings, and I feel more put-together walking out the door. Mornings used to set a bad tone for my whole day. Now they don't.

7. Pick your scent (yes, there are scents)

8. A quick, honest note: who shouldn't use mouth tape

Mouth tape isn't for everyone, and I'd rather tell you now. Skip it and talk to your doctor first if you:

  • Can't breathe comfortably through your nose (congestion, a cold, allergies, a deviated septum)
  • Think you might have sleep apnea (loud snoring, gasping, or feeling exhausted even after a full night)
  • Have asthma, COPD or another breathing condition
  • Feel nauseous at night or can't easily remove the tape

Both the Sleep Foundation and Cleveland Clinic note that research on mouth taping is still limited and recommend checking with a doctor if you have health concerns. Hibertape is a sleep accessory, not a treatment for any condition.

Easy test before your first night: tape on, sit on the couch for 10 minutes while you watch something. If breathing through your nose feels easy, you're good to try it in bed.
